Question: When does the Divine show us how to heal the pain inside? In the past, I was able to find peace and comfort (even after being gay-bashed or having a relationship come to an end), but lately it’s been difficult. I feel like I’m in darkness and just can find the light. At Sunshine Cathedral I am encouraged, but since my dad died 9 months ago, I’m feeling a little lost and missing the joy I once knew. Am I failing in my spiritual quest?

Answer: I don’t think you have failed at anything. You have experienced a significant loss and the grieving process takes time. Nine months isn’t very long, so perhaps you are still missing your father. It sounds like you have had other disappointments in life, and sometimes one hurt will bring up memories of others. Even though grief is painful, it is actually a healing process. Eventually our feelings of loss and sadness evolve into joyful memories that bring us happiness as we reflect on them. I’m glad you feel encouraged at Sunshine Cathedral and I hope you will continue worshiping with us, surrounding yourself with warm, kind, generous people and feeding your spirit with positive messages. If you feel that you may be clinically depressed, I would suggest that you mention this to your doctor or that you see a therapist. You may also try finding a grief support group. But definitely continue hearing positive messages and availing yourself of our loving, worshiping community.
