“And the LORD said to Moses, ‘See, I have made you a god to Pharaoh…’” Exodus 7.1
Moses was retrieved from the river when he was just a baby. Perhaps we are in a sea of possibilities, safe and nurtured even though we don’t know for sure where we’ll end up, until someone sees our sacred value and affirms us by drawing us out, picking us up, and acknowledging our potential.
Moses grew up to be a liberator of his people. Moses found his way and helped his people find their way. Pharaoh represents imperialism, oppression, conflict, and putting people down. But the bible says that Moses is like a god to Pharaoh…Liberation is divine. Liberty, not oppression, is a divine quality. Freedom, not prejudice, is a divine quality. Finding empowerment within oneself, rather than exercising power over others, is the divine way. The Psalmist wrote, “Don’t you know that you are gods, offspring of the Most High, all of you…” (Psalm 82.6). Once we know that we are children of an all-loving God and the light of that divine Presence is within each of us, then we begin to see that light in others and we draw it forth by living in love and offering hope and empowerment to all people.
